Central Asia Symposium on ICT in Education (CASIE 2016)

Central Asia Symposium on ICT in Education (CASIE 2016) will be held in Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan from 27-29 June 2016. The main theme: Unleashing the Power of ICT for Skills Development

Central Asian education systems are aiming to respond to the demands of the region’s rapidly modernizing economies, which require learners equipped with 21st century skills. This often means the need to provide more diverse opportunities for learners upon graduation. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have tremendous potential to address this issue, revitalize education systems, and provide opportunities where none existed before.

Determining ways to harness this potential will be the focus of the upcoming Central Asia Symposium on ICT in Education (CASIE) 2016. CASIE 2016 is being organized by UNESCO Bangkok in collaboration with the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS) and UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty, supported by UNESCO Tashkent and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE), as well as the Intel Corporation.

Around 60 participants are expected to attend from six countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Country delegations will comprise high-level officials from Ministries overseeing technical and vocational skills and training (TVET) as well as ICT in Education, representatives from the Korea Research and Education Information Service, experts from UNESCO and other international organizations.

Since 2011, CASIE has been the premier forum for Central Asian republics to discuss the role that information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play in addressing challenges in education.

    Ministry officials, experts will focus their discussions and collaborations on four overarching themes:
  • ICTs to facilitate open, flexible and blended learning opportunities for all;
  • ICTs to support practical-oriented authentic learning experiences;
  • ICTs to strengthen data-informed education and training policy development to adapt to job market trends;
  • Partnerships for mainstreaming ICTs in education and training.

The world is now pursuing the Education 2030 agenda, specifically the Sustainable Development Goal 4, which calls for “ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Skills development in TVET and using ICT to bolster this form of education will be essential to achieving SDG 4. To that end, CASIE 2016 will feature a Gallery Walk where local and international organizations can present their TVET-related projects and resources in order to disseminate information, promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing in the region and beyond.
