18 November 2016

Last week a regional seminar "The Impact of Glaciers Melting on Water Resources in Central Asia in the Context of Climate Change", organized by the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office with the support of the U.S. Department of State and UNESCO-IHP, was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The event was aimed to continue promoting regional dialogue and cooperation in glacier research, climate change adaptation and sustainable water resources management in Central Asia, as a follow-up of two previously held seminars. The two-day seminar brought together about 60 participants, including representatives of relevant government agencies and scientific institutions from all five Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, as well as various donors, partners and some experts from Russia, Germany, and Switzerland.

The meeting provided an opportunity to share information about ongoing and planned projects and initiatives in the field of glacier research and climate change to improve coordination of activities among all stakeholders in the region.

The seminar’s programme included plenary sessions and breakout discussions in groups. The working groups focused on three main themes: glacier-related hazards and risks, potential project in the field of glaciers and climate change, and creating a platform on information sharing in this area.

As a result of the meeting, the participants of each working group made recommendations, which will be presented in the Common Vision Outcome Document and will be sent to the governments of Central Asian countries and Afghanistan for further approval. The seminar has provided a good platform for knowledge exchange and sharing best practices in this field, bringing together both policy makers and scientists from the entire region to come to a common vision on the existing problems and their solution in relation to glaciers melting under the changing climate in Central Asia.
